About Bernice
Bernice Cheng graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of London (External) in 2010 and completed her certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) in 2012. Bernice was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in October of 2014. Prior to her admission, Bernice commenced her pupillage under the guidance of Mr. Achalingam A/L Sivanesan at Sivanesan & Co. Advocates, where she gained practical experience across a range of civil matters before returning to Sarawak to continue her legal career.
Upon returning to Sarawak, Bernice commenced pupillage under the guidance of Mr. Chong Siew Chiang with Chong Brothers Advocates. Following her admission as an Advocate of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak (in Sarawak) in November 2016, she continued her practice with Chong Brothers Advocates, where she was involved in general civil litigation with particular emphasis on industrial and employment law, banking, debt recovery, bankruptcy, tenancy disputes, family law, guardianship and adoption.
In June 2020, Bernice established Messrs. S. Y. Cheng Advocates, where she continues to advise and represent both individuals and businesses in a broad range of legal matters. Her practice encompasses industrial and employment law, family law, bankruptcy, company law, contract and commercial law, debt recovery, conveyancing, property and land law, personal injury and tort claims, probate and estate administration, wills, and general civil litigation.
Bernice has developed particular experience in family law and industrial and employment law. She regularly advises clients on matters involving divorce and separation, child custody, child and spousal maintenance, division of matrimonial assets, workplace disputes, wrongful dismissal, employment contracts, disciplinary proceedings and negotiated settlements. She also represents clients in court proceedings where litigation becomes necessary.
In addition to litigation and advisory work, Bernice assists clients with conveyancing matters involving the sale and purchase of sub-sale properties, corporate conveyancing matters in Sarawak, as well as estate planning through will drafting and applications for Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration.
Before entering the legal profession, Bernice graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Business Information Systems) from Campbell University, North Carolina in 2004. Her background in business and information systems provides her with an additional perspective when advising business owners and corporate clients on commercial and employment-related matters.
